SPIRIT OF THE ROSE
OKINAWAN KOBUDO CLUB
LEEDS SEMINAR JANUARY 2009
The newly formed Sprit of the Rose Okinawan Kobudo Club held their first open Kobudo seminar and grading in Leeds on Saturday 17th January 2009.
The course was attended by over twenty students all eager to be introduced to the delights of this Okinawan weapons system. The session was taken by Sensei Nick Beech 2nd Dan Karate, 1st Dan Okinawan Kobudo. He is a student of Shihan Albie O'Connor (IOKA UK) and Shihan Sanguinetti (Kodokan USA).
Sensei Beech started the weapons work with the Bo. He concentrated on basic blocks, strikes and grip changes. Once the students had mastered these he then moved onto the practical use of the Bo by having the students perform one, three and five step movements.
Later Sensei Beech introduced the students to the Nunchuku, much to the delight of the younger students. They were taught basic striking techniques and we all had fun watching them hit their knuckles and heads with the weapons. Fortunately we had supplied the students with safety weapons so there was no injuries.
After over two and half hours of basics the seminar ended. All the students not grading left the centre after enjoying a good morning. The gradings were held with all students taking their 1st belt (8th Kyu) Two students were told they would be reassessed later as they were to be graded for 7th Kyu as their knowledge and technique was excellent.
